Revisiting Saigon

April 11, 2015

Greetings to old hacks from Saigon Sunday 12th.

Deanna and Don North arrived here early Saturday after an 18 hour flight from Washington over the north pole. Spent the day trying to find old landmarks to prove this was really Saigon or Ho City. Jet lag best treatment was relaxing at Caravelle pool and sauna drinking  “Miss Saigon” cocktails. Chose to stay a couple of days at Caravelle for old times sake as it was where our ABC News office was located during the war. In the evening we went to where our ABC office was in the corner office third floor and found the elegant “Reflections” an Asian gourmet  restaurant, terrific food and wine selections. Shot out the window toward Opera house and Continental, newly constructed Eden building and new construction in front of Opera house. Then posed for shots with restaurant manager and head waitress.

Travelling on to Phnom Penh 14th , Frangipani Royal Palace hotel where hope to meet up with Chhang Song and visit the Wat Po memorial and see how the Bodi tree is doing. Siem Riep on the 16th and Hanoi the 18th. Then to Can Tho to visit with journalists I trained at the TV station a few years ago.
And hopefully to Con Dau island, once a prison for VC and now a resort for old VC prisoners. Then to Ho City 25th for the Foreign Ministry’s program at the Rex. Hope to see hordes of old hacks back in town.
Cheers!
Don
